4 Choose the “Quietest” Channel for your Wireless Network
In locations where hom es or offices a re close together, su ch as
apartment buildings or office compl exes, there may be w ireless
networks nearby that c an conflict with yours.
Use the Site Survey cap abilities found in the Wireless Uti lity of your
wireless adapter to loc ate any other wirel ess networks tha t are available
(see your wireless adap ter’s user manual), a nd move your Router and
computers to a channel as far away from ot her networks as p ossible.
• Experiment with more than one of the avai lable channels, in
order to find the clear est connection and avoid interfer ence from
neighboring cordless phones or other wireless devices .
• For Belkin wireless ne tworking produc ts, use the detail ed Site
Survey and wireless c hannel informatio n included with yo ur
wireless network car d. See your networ k card’s user guide for
more information.
These guidelines shou ld allow you to cover the maximum pos sible area
with your Router. Should you need to cover an eve n wider area, we
suggest the Belkin Wir eless Range Ex tender/Access Point.
5 secure Connections, VPNs, and aol
Secure connections t ypically require a user name and password, and
are used where secur ity is importa nt. Secure conne ctions include:
• Virtual Private Networ k (VPN) connec tions, often use d to connect
remotely to an office network
• The “Bring Your Own Acces s” program from A merica Online ( AOL),
which lets you use AOL th rough broadband p rovided by another
cable or DSL servic e
• Most online banking web sites
• Many commercial website s that require a u ser name and pa ssword
to access your account
Secure connections c an be interrupted by a computer’s power
management setting, w hich causes it to “go to sleep.” The sim plest
solution to avoid this is to simply reconne ct by rerunning th e VPN or
AOL software, or by re- logging into the s ecure website.
A second alternative is to change your co mputer’s power manage ment
settings so it does n ot go to sleep; however, th is may not be appr opriate
for portable compute rs. To change your powe r management set ting
under Windows, see the “Power Options” item in the Control Pane l.
If you continue to have dif ficulty with Se cure Connections , VPNs, and
AOL, please review the s teps above to be sur e you have addresse d
these issues.
