Cisco MGX 8220 Installation and Configuration
Release 5.0, Part Number 78-6430-03 Rev. D0, November 2003
Chapter Core Module Overview
Console Ports
There are three hardware console p o rt s lo ca ted on the ASC back card.
The maintenance port is an RS- 2 32 p o rt u sed by a d ir ec t c on n ect al phanumeric terminal for input ti ng
command-line interface (CLI) comma nds. Y-cables cannot be used on this port. This port must be us ed
to make initial IP ad dr es s as s ig n ments on the other po r ts bef o re the other ports ca n b e u s ed .
The control port and IEEE 802.3 (Ethernet, LAN AUI) ports are used for inputting commands and file
transfers (statistics collectio n and firmware download). The contro l port communicates using SLI P and
the Ethernet port communicates using IP. These ports sup port TFTP, SNMP, and CLI (through Tel net).
The control port can be used with Y-cables for redundancy when a second ASC card set is present.
Ethernet Transceiver Extenders
Some Ethernet transceivers with int egr at ed D B- 1 5 co nn ec to rs can n ot be co n ne c te d di re ctl y to th e
LAN AUI Ethernet port on the Cisco MGX 8220 ASC back card because of interference with the ASC
back card extractor levers. To overcome this problem, two Et hernet transceiver extenders (one each for
a primary and secondary ASC card) are provided.
If you encounter difficulty in connecting an Ethernet transc eiver, install an extender on each ASC card.
1. With the retaining clip on the LAN AUI port in the unlocked (up) position, connect the Ethernet
transceiver extender to the LAN AUI port on the ASC back card as shown in Figure2-12.
2. Push the port retaining clip i n to th e l o cked (d own) position to secure the conn ect io n .
3. With the retaining clip on the tr an s ceiver ext ender in the unlocked (up) po sition, connect the
Ethernet transceiver to the extender as s h own in F ig u re 2- 1 2.
4. Push the extender retaining cli p i n to th e lo cked ( d own) po si tion to secure the connection .
