Cisco MGX 8220 System Overview
This chapter describes the features and functions of Release 5.0 of the Cisco MGX 8220 edge
concentrator.
Figure1-1 is an illustration of a Cisco MGX 8220 switch.

The Cisco MGX 8220 IP+ATM edge concentrator offers a wide range of services in a single, compact
aggregation shelf. This enables ser vice providers to build an integrated mult iservice network to deliver
Frame Relay, ATM, and private line services. By concentr at in g na rrow ba nd t ra ffic over a w id e- ar ea
ATM network backbone, the Cisco MGX 8220 reduces equipment costs and makes efficient use of
trunking resources. This protects a service providers investment in equipment and allows the rapid
deployment of new serv ices as required.
Configuration Examples
The Cisco MGX 8220 edge conce nt rato r ca n be used to concentrate servic es for a Cisco BPX 8600
series switch either from a loc al or r em o te lo cat io n . Th e C isc o M G X 8 2 20 ca n a lso be used as a stand
alone edge concentrator.

Cisco BPX 8600 Series Switch

When configured as part of a Cisco BPX 8600 series wide-area switch, the Cisco MGX 8220 edge
concentrator allows modula r scal in g o f t he s ervi ce nod e ca pac ity w it hou t re qui ring ad diti on al s wi tche s.
All Cisco MGX 8220 edge con centrator shelves in a service no de are logically managed as an integrated
part of the service node.
Each Cisco MGX 8220 shelf connects to the Cisco BPX switch across one of the following:
T3 or E3 ATM to a BNI or T3/E3 BXM module
SMF SONET ATM link to a BXM-155-8 port or BXM-155-4 port
