Cisco MGX 8220 Installation and Configuration
Release 5.0, Part Number 78-6430-03 Rev. D0, November 2003
Chapter
Unpacking
customer-supplied terminal block must be provided. Only power supplies complying with SELV
requirements in EN 60950, UL 1950, IEC950, can be connected to the 48V DC input of the
MGX 8220 system.
AC Version
For the AC version, an AC power source is required. For power supply redundancy, two such AC
sources, (preferably independent ) are required. Each source should be ca pable of supplying 500W
per shelf. The AC power cables from the AC source attach to the AC power module, which is
mounted below the shel f a n d c o ol in g assembly.
An AC circuit breaker is recommended for the AC power source that supplies AC power to each
MGX 8220 shelf. This circuit b reake r should protect against excess curre nt s, s h o rt ci rc ui ts, and
earth faults in accordance with na tional and local electrical codes.
The dedicated circuit breaker should be sized so that the rated current and the trip delay is higher
and longer than the MGX 8220 ci rcuit breaker. A 20A, 2-pole AC circuit bre ake r with a long trip
delay is recommende d.
For information purposes, the MGX 8220 shelf uses a 20A, 2-pole AC circuit breaker on each AC
input. The circuit breaker manufacturer is ETA (part number 8340-F120-P1P2-B2H020A).

Cooling

The site must be capable of maintaining a maximum ambient temperature of 4 0°C while the system is
operating. The recommended tem p er atu re r an g e i s 20 to 3 0 °C. A fully loaded MGX 8220 switch can
dissipate up to 2400 Btus.
Caution Inadequate ventilation to t he s y stem can cause reliability or fu nc tio nality issues. It is extremely
important that the MGX 822 0 sw it ch is in s tal le d i n a m anner that will ensure unrest ricte d airflow
through the system. Cisco recomme nds that the switch be mounted in a frame or a cabinet that does
not have front or rear doors that can restrict airflow through the system. If you are going to mount
the MGX 8220 switch in a fra me or a cab in et th at has front or rear doors, contact C isco TAC to
determine if the doors ca n pr ov ide adequate ventilation to t he s y stem .
