Physical Connections
The Cisco MGX8220 shelf offers four physical access methods to perform these user interface
functions. The physical connection depends on the type of function to be performed.
Serial line access through the RS-232 maintenance port of the ASC
Serial line access through the RS-232 control port on the ASC using Serial Line IP SLIP
Ethernet access through the AUI LAN po rt
In-band access through eight dedicated virtual connections over the Cisco BPX network to the
BNM

Protocols
The protocols that ca n be employed are
CLI (maintenance port, control port, LAN port, and in-band)
Telnet is used to access the command-l in e i n ter fa ce (C LI) through the control, LAN, an d in -b an d
ports. The maintenance port is u s ed t o co nn ec t a du m b t er min al f or d irec t entry of commands.
TCP/IP TFTP (cont ro l port, LAN port, an d in-band)
TFTP is used to transfer files between a workstatio n and the Cisco MGX8220 shelf. This protocol
is used to configure and collec t statistics and configuration file s . I t is a ls o u sed to d ownload
firmware to the Cisco MGX 8220 shelf.
UDP/IP SNMP (control port, LAN port, and in-band)
SNMP is used to configure, mo nitor, and manage the Cis co MGX 8220 resources using SNMP get
and set commands. Cis co WAN Manager (CWM) or othe r registered SNMP Mana gers can be used
for SNMP functions.
