The present volume level may always be seen in the lower right corner of the front panel display (see Figure FPD-1 on page 32), as long as the display has not been turned off.

Should you wish to quickly lower the volume at any time, such as to answer the telephone, simply press the Mute button 7 ¶ on the front panel or remote control. The word MUTE will appear in both the front panel display and the on-screen display, to remind you that the Mute function has been engaged. The on-screen display will initially read SYSTEM MUTE (Figure OSD-20), changing to Volume Muted (Figure OSD-21) after a few seconds.

Note: The volume level to which the system lowers in Mute is adjustable when in the System Options menu, as described on page 41.

You may release the mute function and return to the original volume setting by pressing either Mute button 7 ¶ a second time, or by raising or lowering the volume using the front panel Volume Control buttons 8 or the Volume +/buttons º on the remote control.

Setting the Balance and Level Trims

Unlike conventional stereo receivers, where left/right balance is often adjusted, the true “balance” controls for a surround receiver should not normally be adjusted. Sound level balance should be adjusted using the Output Level Adjustments in the Speaker Setup menu. (See the Speaker Setup section starting on page 32 for more information.) However, when the seating positions in a room are temporarily changed, or when you wish to adjust the left/right balance or front/back fade to accommodate a particular piece of program material or the tastes of a different listener, that is easy to do.
