How Much Detergent To Use

The detergent quantities suggested in the chart are for individual drawer use.

The amount of detergent to use depends on the hardness of the water, and the type of detergent. Too little detergent, and the dishes will not be clean. Too much detergent in soft water, and glassware will etch.

Water hardness can change over a period of time. Find out what the water’s hardness is by asking your local water department, wa- ter softener company, or county extension agent.

You can order a water hardness test strip at no charge. In the U.S.A., call the Customer Interaction Center, and ask for Part Number 4171690. (See “Assistance or Service” in the Use and Care Guide.)

Different brands of dishwasher detergent have different amounts of phosphorus for softening water. If the water is hard and a detergent with a phosphorous content of less than 8.7% is used, more detergent may be necessary, or use a detergent with a phosphorous content higher than 8.7%.
