Select a buttonhole template @. Pull back the guide plate catch (_, and slide the template into the guide plate (_ to get the desired buttonhole. Release the catch to lock the template into place. Insert the gear_of the base plate into the template guide slot (_so that the guide btock(_ fits into the center of the guide slot.
