mCheck the ID numbers of all SCSI equipment (anything connected to the SCSI port [g]) connected to your computer. Each SCSI device must have its own unique ID number. If your computer came with the optional CD-ROM drive installed, it has SCSI ID number 3, and the computer itself has SCSI ID number 7. Therefore, any SCSI equipment you connect should not use ID numbers 3 or 7. See the manuals that came with your SCSI equipment, in conjunction with Chapter 3 in this manual, for information on setting SCSI ID numbers.

mIf the hard disk is your startup disk, start your computer with the Macintosh Performa CD: Performa Software. Do this by inserting the CD-ROM disc into the CD-ROM drive and holding down the C key while you restart the computer. (See the section “Starting Up From the Macintosh Performa CD: Performa Software” later in this chapter if you need more help.) Then follow the instructions in “Repairing a Damaged Disk” later in this chapter to test your startup hard disk and repair any damage.

If repairing the disk doesn’t help, follow the instructions in Chapter 7, “Reinstalling Your Computer’s Software,” to reinstall system software on your startup hard disk.

You need to rebuild the desktop—a process that helps your Macintosh keep track of files and folders on your hard disk. For instructions, see “Rebuild Your Desktop” in the section “If You Have Trouble” earlier in this chapter.

If icons do not appear correctly after you rebuild the desktop, try rebuilding a second time.

Your Macintosh can’t read a floppy disk.

If you see a message that a floppy disk is unreadable, try one of the following:

mIf the disk has never been used, you may simply need to initialize it—that

is, prepare it for use. For instructions, see the “Disks” topic of Macintosh Guide, available in the Guide (h) menu.

mThe disk may be damaged. See “Repairing a Damaged Disk” later in this chapter for information on testing and repairing disks.
