The processing of adding an adapter depends on whether the adapter is on the list of known adapters or whether you have to specify the adapter’s characteristics.

Adding a known adapter

The process to add a known adapter, such as the IBM Gigabit Ethernet SX Adapter, is as follows:

1. Select Tools -> Add Card Wizard. You are presented with Figure 5-7.

The bottom two check boxes are selected, indicating the following default settings:

Active PCI Manager will suggest only slots with hot-plug support (all of the slots in the x440 and RXE-100 support hot-plug).

Slots that will not require a server restart.

The Add Card Wizard, when finding the best slot in which to place the new adapter, may find a slot that needs to reset the bus in order for it to work.

An example would be a 133 MHz PCI-X adapter being added to a bus that already has a 133 MHz PCI-X adapter installed. Since the hardware only supports two adapters in the one bus running at most at 100 MHz, the bus
