12.3 When a function does not work, check here

If you still have difficulties after following the instructions in this section, reset the unit. Disconnect the
power cord and turn OFF the handset. Reconnect the power cord and turn ON the handset.

12.3.1 Initial settings

Problem Cause & Solution
I cannot hear a dial tone. LIf you use a splitter to connect the unit, remove the splitter and
connect the unit to the wall jack directly. If the unit operates
properly, check the splitter.
LDisconnect the unit from the telephone line and connect a known
working telephone. If the working telephone operates properly,
contact our service personnel to have the unit repaired. If the
working telephone does not operate properly, contact your
telephone company.
LThe power cord or telephone line cord is not connected. Check the
connections.
LIf you connected the fax machine through a computer modem,
connect the fax machine directly to a telephone line jack.
I cannot make calls. LThe dialling mode setting may be wrong. Change the setting (page
23).
The unit does not ring. LThe ringer volume is turned OFF. Adjust it (page 22).
Problem Cause & Solution
The unit displays “CHECK
PAPER” even though
paper is inserted.
LThe paper is inserted halfway. Insert it correctly (page 17) and
press {START} to clear the message.
The other party complains
they only hear a fax tone
and cannot talk.
LFAX ONLY mode is set. Tell the other party the number is only used
for faxes.
LChange the receiving mode to TAM/FAX mode (page 47), TEL
mode (page 45) or TEL/FAX mode (page 46).
The {REDIAL} / {PAUSE}
button does not function
properly.
LIf this button is pressed during dialling, a pause will be inserted. If
pressed immediately after a dial tone is obtained, the last number
dialled will be redialled.
The receiving mode does
not function properly.
LThe Distinctive Ring is set (feature #31 on page 50).
During programming, I
cannot enter the code or
ID number.
LAll or part of the numbers are the same as another code or ID.
Change the number:
remote operation ID: feature #11 on page 59.
fax activation code: feature #41 on page 61.
The ink film runs out
quickly.
LThe help printing function, copy function, and reports also use ink
film.
LEven if there are only a few sentences, every page that comes out
of the machine is considered a full page.
LTurn OFF the following features:
sending report: feature #04 on page 59.
journal report: feature #22 on page 60.
Caller ID list: feature #26 on page 60.
