Caution! To prevent damaging your HP PSC, do not use a phone cord to connect the device to an Ethernet network, and do not connect the HP PSC’s Ethernet port to a phone jack.

Internet connections

Ethernet networks might or might not be connected to the Internet. If you place your HP PSC on an Ethernet network connected to the Internet, it is recommended that you use a gateway so that the HP PSC’s IP address is assigned dynamically through DHCP. A gateway can either be a router or a Windows computer running Internet Connection Sharing (ICS).

Ethernet network without an Internet connection

In this example, the network devices are connected to a hub, and there is no Internet connection. Devices use AutoIP to obtain IP addresses. If you have this configuration, connect your HP PSC to the hub with an Ethernet cable and proceed to set up your hp psc for wired network use on page 134.

Note: Your HP PSC 2500 Series is an Internet-ready device. It has specific functionality (such as enabling you to send pictures to a predetermined destination) that is only available with a Broadband Internet connection.

Ethernet network with Internet access provided by modem

In the following example, the network devices are connected to a hub, and a modem is used to provide Internet access to a single computer. The modem is connected to the computer using a phone cord and jack. Neither the HP PSC nor any of the other computers on the network have access to the Internet. See the Note above.
