Here are some situations and examples:

If you know which device you want to boot from, and y ou know that it contains a bootable operating system, t ype the following at the BOOT_ADMIN> prompt:

boot device 4Return5

where device is one of the following:

The hardware path to the device, speci￿ed in Mnemonic St yle Notation The pn designation of the device, as listed in the device searc h

For example, if y ou wish to boot an operating system that is stored on a DDS-format tape in a driv e that is located at scsi.1.0 and is designated by the search as device P2, type one of the following commands at the

prompt:

boot scsi.1.0 4Return5

boot P2 4Return5

The operating system on the speci￿ed device is used to start y our Model 742i.

If you wish to interact with the Initial System Loader (ISL) before booting your system, t ype the following at the BOOT_ADMIN> prompt:

boot device isl 4Return5

This causes the ISL to be loaded from the speci￿ed device. After a short time, the following prompt appears on y our screen:

ISL>

ISL is the program that actually con trols the loading of the operating system. By interacting with ISL, y ou can choose to load an alternate v ersion

Bof the HP-UX operating system.

For example, if the usual k ernel (/hp-ux) on your root disk ( scsi.6.0 ) has become corrupted, and y ou wish to boot y our system from the bac kup kernel (/SYSBCKUP ), type the following at the ISL> prompt:

hpux boot disk(scsi.6;0)/SYSBCKUP
