Before you begin:

First make a note of the tape driv e model and its hardw are address (SCSI bus address) so that y ou will be able to iden tify it later.

1. Log on as root.

2. Run SAM by entering the following:

$ /usr/bin/sam

To get help in SAM, pressing the 4f15 key gives you context-sensitive information for the object at the location of the cursor.

3.Highlight and select Peripheral Devices ->

4.At the next screen highligh t and select Tape Drives ->

5.The Tape Drive Manager screen lists what tape devices are connected,

including your new device. Highligh t that device.

6.From the Actions menu, choose Add... . A message screen giv es you the hardware steps for adding the tape driv e. Choose OK or press 4Return5.

7.A con￿rmation screen indicates whether an y related device driv ers needed to be added to the kernel. Choose Yes or press 4Return5.

8.If you needed to add a device driv er, you will also need to create a new kernel and (eventually) reboot the system. Select from the men u on the Create a New Kernel screen whether you want to create the new kernel now, later, or cancel the proposed modi￿cations. (Make sure y our choice has an asterisk placed b y it, by pressing Return while that line is highlighted.) Choose OK to con￿rm your choice of action.

9.You will next be giv en a choice of whether to install the new k ernel now or later. If y ou move the kernel into place now, the system will also reboot. If you choose to do it later, y ou can then move the new kernel,
