Turning On Your System

With all peripheral devices turned o￿, do the following:

1.Turn on the power to your display. The power indicator LED on the displa y unit will show that it is turned on, ev en if the screen remains dark. Mak e

sure of the following:

a.The appropriate LAN connection has been made to the Model 742i.

b.Normally, you will use a character terminal connected to the RS232A port on the Model 742i. If y ou use a remote graphical displa y host connected via LAN, mak e sure the remote system is con￿gured to host the Model 742i. See \Displa ying Graphics on a Remote X Host", in this chapter, for the speci￿cs of setting this up.

2.Check SCSI connections and turn on the po wer to any peripheral devices.

3.Turn your Model 742i system on. The LEDs on the fron t panel will light, showing that the po wer is on.

4.You should see a sequence of boot messages. Allow the boot to con tinue.

5.During the boot process, messages will prompt y ou for the host name, IP number, and time zone. If y ou have this information, en ter it as requested. Otherwise, press 4Return5. You can also enter this information later b y typing set_parms 4Return5 after login.

6.You will be asked if you want to set a root passw ord at this time. If y ou choose to do this, see \Selecting a New P assword", in this c hapter, for password requirements.

The system will ￿nish the boot sequence, and y ou will see the \ Console login: " prompt.
