Managing a Boot Failure

The boot program is located in the Boot R OM of your Model 742i.

Here are some things to c heck if something has gone wrong at this poin t in the boot process:

Boot Program Initializes Hardware

Problems during this ￿rst stage of the boot process are rare. A t this stage problems can be caused b y:

No power to the system (c heck your building's circuit break ers and the power connections to your system equipmen t)

Processor hardware failure (see Table 6-1, in this chapter).

Interface card hardw are failure.

Model 742i isn't fully plugged in its VME slot.

LAN MAU connector is loose. Incorrectly connected SCSI cable.

6Turn o￿ the power to the Model 742i (leav e any external disks po wered up and running). Wait ￿ve or ten seconds and turn the po wer to the system bac k on.

If the problem recurs, record the symptoms, the status of an y indicators (especially any LED displays) on your processor, and an y messages that appear on your system console.

At this stage in the boot process, most of the problems that occur require y our hardware to be serviced by a person trained and quali￿ed to do so.

Selecting an Alternate Operating System

If your hardware is functioning correctly , but your usual boot device (suc h as the root disk) is not responding as it should, y ou can select an alternate available boot device man ually by following these steps:

1.Check the LED codes (Table 6-1) to see if there is a hardw are problem, or if there is an operating system loading problem (T able 6-2).

2.Turn o￿ the power to your Model 742i, and then turn it bac k on.
