device ￿le

A ￿le used for the computer to comm unicate with a device suc h as a tape drive or a printer.

DDS

Digital Data Storage. HP-supported \D AT" format for data storage.

dialog box

A subwindow of an application used to request information, or to displa y status or error conditions.

directory

A table of identi￿ers and references (suc h as ￿le names) that refer to corresponding ￿les and items of data. Used in a t ypical HP-UX organizational structure to pro vide an organizational and logical iden tity for a given group of ￿les and directories.

environment

The set of de￿ned shell variables (some of whic h are PATH, TERM, SHELL, HOME) that de￿ne the conditions under whic h your commands run. These conditions can include y our terminal characteristics, home directory, and default searc h path.

￿le access permissions

File name characteristics (including read, write , and execute) which determine whether a process can perform a requested operation on the ￿le (such as opening a ￿le for writing). Access permissions can be c hanged by a chmod(1) command.

￿leset

Describes a logically-de￿ned, named set of ￿les on an update or installation tape.

￿le system

The organization of ￿les on a giv en storage device, possibly including hierarchical directories.
