Backing Up Your System and Software

The most important part of y our system is the data y ou have accumulated. It is also especially important to protect y our system from corruption. Y ou can protect your data and system from loss, using the general procedures giv en in this chapter. (For detailed procedures, see Installing and Updating HP-UX 9.0 and System Administration Tasks.)

Make sure you create and main tain a backup HP-UX kernel (/SYSBCKUP ) on your disk from whic h you can boot in an emergency. A /SYSBCKUP is automatically created b y SAM whenever you recon￿gure and reboot a new kernel from your system console.

To build your recovery system, y ou can use the following devices:

Cartridge tape driv es

DDS-Format (\DAT") drives Magneto-optical disk driv es

5 Other hard disk driv es

Back up your ￿le system.

Restore your ￿le system, if needed.

Creating a Recovery System

A \recovery system" is a special tape con taining a subset of the HP-UX operating system. In the ev ent of an operating system failure that prev ents you from booting or logging in to HP-UX, you can boot from the reco very system tape and use the tools on the tape to repair the ￿le system on y our disk. A recovery system is created b y using commands rather than b y using SAM.

You can also restore y our system from a system CD R OM that you can purchase from your HP sales represen tative.

You should make a recovery tape using mkrs at the following times: Immediately after y ou set up the Model 742i.

Each time you update your operating system or mak e a change in your disk swap con￿guration.

To do this, you will need a tape driv e (cartridge or DDS-format) and one or more tapes.
