Restoring Your Operating System Using the Recov ery Tape

If your operating system or the en tire root disk becomes corrupted and not usable, you can restore y our system using y our recovery system tape and y our archive backup tape(s). Also see \Booting the Model 742i" in Appendix B for information on using the Boot R OM to ￿nd and boot from a reco very tape.

 

If your operating system is still usable but not functioning correctly , you can

 

load the ￿leset

TOOL from an update tape to obtain diagnostic utilities,

 

You can boot a memory-based v ersion of /hp-ux(known as a recovery system )

 

from the tape cartridge or DDS-format reco very tape which you have made.

 

From the recovery system, y ou can mount and unmount ￿le systems, run fsck

 

to check and repair ￿le systems, cop y ￿les back onto your system disk, and

 

various other tasks.

Caution

Do not run fsck on a ￿le system that is moun ted and active.

 

This could introduce data corruption. Run fsck in single-user mode when checking the root ￿le system. F or ￿le systems other than the root ￿le system, unmoun t the ￿le system, run fsck, and then remount the ￿le system.

If your system disk (including /SYSBCKUP ) is unbootable, do the follo wing:

1.Verify that the reco very tape is not write protected. HP-UX needs to ha ve write access to y our recovery tape when you boot it.

2.Load the reco very tape in your tape drive and be sure that the driv e is turned on.

3.Wait for the driv e to become ready (the \busy" light remains o￿).

4.Reset your computer by turning it o￿ and then bac k on. Boot the system and pause the boot process b y pressing 4ESC5 after the computer performs its color self-test and prompts for boot selection.
