Using mkrs to Create a Recovery System

The mkrs command constructs a reco very system on remo vable media (or a formatted hard disk driv e). If a system later becomes un bootable due to a corrupt root disk, then y ou can boot your system from the reco very tape. Once booted on the reco very system, y ou can then use the tools it pro vides to repair the corrupt root disk.

Some Options for mkrs

Note

The -s option is necessary for building Series 700 DDS-format

tape recovery systems.

If enough free disk space is a vailable in /usr/tmp (typically 10-20Mb), the -q

option can be used to mak e mkrs create an image of the reco very system in this

directory before cop ying it to the reco very media. This option generally sa ves

5

a great deal of time due to reduced seeking on non-random-access reco very

media (cartridge tape and DDS-format). Note: for DDS-format tape reco very

systems, the -qoption is assumed.

When creating a DDS-format reco very system for a small memory system

(8Mb), the -soption should be used to specify that a smaller set of ￿les be

placed on the recovery system.

See mkrs 1M for more options with mkrs.

Source Device Files

By default, mkrs uses the following device ￿les:

/dev/update.src

/dev/rct/c0

/dev/rct

If none of the above defaults exist on the system, one of these devic e ￿les must be created or the -foption must be used to specify the device ￿le to be used. The recovery device ￿le can be either a bloc k or a character device ￿le.
