Configuring for a DDS Tape Drive

This section con tains instructions for con￿guring a new DDS driv e on HP-UX.

The DDS (\Digital Data Storage") T ape Drive is a sequen tial-access, read-write device using remo vable DDS cassettes. Although DDS driv es are similar to D AT players in the audio industry , the cassettes are not interchangeable. There are t wo major di￿erences:

1. Audio cassette tapes transfer data in streaming mode. That is, they are

left in motion for periods of min utes. Tapes used for data are con tinually

starting, stopping and repositioning, whic h is stressful to the tape. DDS

4

tapes are made rugged enough to stand this kind of treatmen t. Audio tapes

are not expected to perform this w ell, and as a result fail v ery quickly in a

data environment.

2.DDS cassettes ha ve a much tighter case dimension speci￿cation than D AT cassettes. As a result, D AT cassettes can get stuc k in a DDS drive, requiring the drive to be disassem bled. For this reason, only Hewlett-P ackard supported or properly certi￿ed DDS tape cartridges should be used. Use of DAT tapes intended for audio use could v oid your warranty.

Caution

Do not attempt to extricate a D AT cassette which is stuck

in a DDS drive. You may damage the driv e. Have the drive

disassembled by someone quali￿ed to do so.
