￿Alert notifications are sent to a designated network management station (NMS) using simple network management protocol (SNMP) traps.

￿Alert notifications are sent to a designated e-mail address. See the Enterprise Management window help for specific procedures. To send e-mail to IBM, contact your customer service representative and ask for IBM DS4000 Service Alert (premium feature). The latter is a chargeable service provided by IBM.

￿Alert notifications are sent to a designated alphanumeric pager when third-party software is used to convert e-mail messages. See the Enterprise Management window help for specific procedures.

The following information is contained in an e-mail or trap message:

￿Name of the affected managed device

￿Host IP address (only for a storage subsystem managed through a host-agent)

￿Host name/ID (shown as directly managed if a storage subsystem is managed through each controller's Ethernet connection)

￿Event error type related to an event log entry

￿Date and time of when the event occurred

￿Brief description of the event

To set up alert notifications using SNMP traps, you must copy and compile a management information base (MIB) file on the designated network management station (NMS). The NMS is the workstation where your network management service is running. For example, this can be an IBM Tivoli NetView® network management station. To learn more about IBM Tivoli NetView visit:

Complete the following steps to set up alert notifications using SNMP traps before the set up of alert destinations. You need to set up the designated management station only once:

1.Ensure that the installation CD is inserted in the CD-ROM drive on your designated NMS. With the shipping of the IBM System Storage DR550, you will receive installation CDs for the DS4000 Storage Manager. Look for the CD that includes the MIB file.

2.From the installation CD, copy the SM8.MIB file from the SM8mib directory to the NMS.

Note: Installing this MIB will not affect other areas of Storage Manager 9.12 (or 9.15). Do not attempt to install other portions of the CD.

3.Follow the steps required by your NMS to compile the MIB. For details, contact your network administrator or see the documentation for the network management product you are using.

To set up the alert environment and specify destinations, proceed as follows:

1.From the host standby node, drs_engine2 (if you have a dual node configuration) or from drs- engine (if you have a single node configuration), start the SMclient application. Use the AIX user dr550 to log in. The graphical output of the DS4000 SMclient appears on your X-Windows enabled workstation, and you will see a screen similar to the one below.
