2.1 Client-server architecture
One or more server systems and several clients (workstations) are co nnected in a network
(LAN, Local Area Network and WAN, Wide Area Network) with Advanced Server for UNIX.
The server systems provide services and resources in the local network. In co ntrast, the
clients utilize the services and resources of the server and generally do not p rovide any
services and resources themselves in the network.
Provided they are authorized, every client can access every se rver system in the local
network. Advanced Server for UNIX also supports so-called trust relationshi ps between
domains, which permit the user to access resources in other domains.
2.2 Shared resources
The resources provided by a server system for the network are known as shared
resources. Shared resources are protected against unauthorized acce ss (for more
detailed information, see section on “Security concept”).
Advanced Server for UNIX provides users with the following types of r esources, which can
be shared by one or more users in the network:
Shared directory
Shared printer
Interprocess communication resource IPC$
Network-wide administration (Resource ADMIN$)
