protocols enabled on both NICs simultaneously. The wireless
NIC must be configured for the Ad Hoc network type.
Wireless Configuration
To communicate, two wireless devices must have th e same
Service Set Identifier (SSID). They must als o use the same
frequency or channel. You can configure these and other settings
at the copier’s control panel or in TopAccess.
Generally, you can change the wireless settings without rebooting
the controller. This includes changing from one Access Point
(AP) to another by changing SSID. However, if the Access Points
are connected to different networks, a reboot is necessary.
Infrastructure Network Type
For this type of network, the channel is set on “automatic.”
Where several APs have the same SSID, so that a client can roam
from one to the other, you need to specify a Default Access Point
(DAP) to which the client will automatically connect whenever
possible.
If each AP has a unique SSID, you don’t need to specify a Default
Access Point
Ad Hoc Network Type
Ad Hoc is designed as a peer-to-peer communication mode.
Clients must use the same SSID for communication to be
possible. The client that starts an Ad Hoc s ession sets a
“communicating” channel. Other clients that wish to
communicate with this first client are autom atically tuned to
match the first client’s “communicating” channel. The channel set
in their own configurations is ignored unless it matches.
WEP Security
WEP security allows the access point to authenticate the client
before communication takes place. Authentication is when the
AP checks that the client is authorized to access the network.
Communication is when the two actually exchange data.
The WEP encryption key can be either 40 bits (5 pairs of hex) or
128 bits (13 pairs of hex). These keys can take any hex value and
are not case sensitive. They must match exactly between the
access point and the clients.
