Example

AppleLWTest[LaserWriter_12_600_PS]:\

:lp=:mx#0:rm=LaserWriterFloor2:\

:rp=AppleLWTest:\

:sd=/usr/spool/lpd/AppleLWTest:\

:lf=/usr/spool/lpd/printerlog

Note: For a description of some of the parameters in this printcap entry, see “Getting UNIX Users Started Using the Printer,” later in this chapter.

3Create and set the privileges for the spool directory specified in step 2. Example

mkdir /usr/spool/lpd/AppleLWTest

chown daemon /usr/spool/lpd/AppleLWTest chgrp daemon /usr/spool/lpd/AppleLWTest chmod 775 /usr/spool/lpd/AppleLWTest

Printing a test page

Use any PostScript file as a test page.

Most UNIX systems use either the lpr or lp command to print documents over a TCP/IP network. The following commands show examples of how to print a file named file.postscript to the printer:

Example

lpr -PAppleLWTest file.postscript

If everything is working, the Ready/In Use light on the printer (leftmost of the indicator lights) will blink, then the pages will print. If there’s a problem, see Chapter 13 for troubleshooting tips.

Cleaning up the printcap file after testing the printer

You may want to delete the test entry you made in your /etc/printcap file and instead create a new one as described in “Getting UNIX Users Started Using the Printer,” later in this chapter.
