Chapter6 Maintaining the Cisco MGX Switch or Gateway
Removing the Center Guide Modules
The MGX 8850 (PXM1E/PXM45), MGX 8850/B and MGX 8950 switch each use a standard plenum.
Starting May 2003, with MGX Release 4, the standard plenum has the ability to support an air filter. The
purpose of the filter is to keep dust out of the interior of the switch.

Scheduled Maintenance of the Air Filter

This section describes the part numbers and procedures requi red for air filter maintenance.

Replacing the Filter

Note It is recommended that you visually inspect the air filter weekly. Replace the filter as required. The
dustier the environment, the more frequently the filter should be replaced.
Note Cisco does not provide filter replacements for the MGX 88xx switches. Replacement air filters may be
obtained from a third party.
Warning
Filters cannot be cleaned. They must be replaced.
To replace the air filter:
Step1 Ensure that the door on the MGX switch is fastened closed. The door must be closed to ensur e proper
alignment after service.
Step2 Loosen the captive screws to the right and left of the air intake plenum.
Step3 Open the plenum, which is hinged at the bottom.
If the air filter inside is soiled, remove and discard the filter. Proceed to Step4.
If the air filter is clean, proceed to Step5.
Step4 Insert a new filter into the plenum.
Step5 Close the air intake plenum. Tighten the captive screws.
Step6 Record the date each time you replace the filter.
Removing the Center Guide Modules
To install double-height cards where single-height cards were installed, remove the center guide modules
located at the front of the card cage (see Figure6-7). Each center guide module encompasses two front
card slots, so plan front card replacements accordingly. Install a blank faceplate over each empty slot in
the new configuration to facilitate air flow and EMI containment.
