CAUTION:

Use safe practices when lifting.

3.Remove the DS4100 from its shipping container and check the contents (see “Inventory checklist” on page 5). If any items are missing, contact your IBM reseller before proceeding.

4.Assemble the tools and equipment that you will need for installation. These might include:

v The power cords that are shipped with the DS4100

vNumber 2 Phillips and medium flat-blade screwdrivers

vAntistatic protection (such as a grounding wrist strap)

vFibre channel and Ethernet interface cables and cable straps

vSFP modules

vThe rack-mounting hardware that ships with the DS4100

vThe DS4000 Storage Manager Version 9.10 Support CD, which includes the IBM DS4000 Storage Manager 9.1 software and DS4000 storage server controller firmware 05.42.xx.xx. You use this software to configure the storage subsystems. For the latest controller firmware, check the IBM support web site for DS4000 storage products.

5.Continue with “Preparing the site.”

Preparing the site

This section lists the floor space requirements and weight information for the DS4100. For information on interface cables and connections, see Chapter 3, “Cabling the storage server,” on page 45.

Floor space: The floor area at the installation site must provide the following conditions:

vEnough stability to support the weight of the fully configured DS4100 and associated systems

vSufficient space to install the DS4100

Weight: The DS4100 total weight depends on the number of DS4000 1.5 Gbps SATA hard disk drives that are installed. A fully configured DS4100 with two fans, two power supplies, two RAID controllers, and up to 14 SATA hard disk drives installed weighs 40.8 kg (85.7 lbs).

Continue with “Preparing the rack cabinet.”

Preparing the rack cabinet

Important: Before you install the DS4100 in a rack cabinet, keep in mind the following considerations:

vReview the documentation that comes with your rack cabinet for safety and cabling considerations.

vInstall the DS4100 in a recommended 22° C (72° F) environment.

vTo ensure proper airflow, do not block the air vents; 15 cm (6 in.) of air space is sufficient.

vTo ensure rack stability, load the rack cabinet starting at the bottom.

vIf you install multiple components in the rack cabinet, do not overload the power outlets.
