Attention: In the initial installation of the DS4100, you can add only new expansion units to the DS4100 storage server. This means that there must be no existing configuration information on the expansion unit that you want to install. If the expansion unit that you want to install currently contains logical drives or configured hot spares, and you want them to be part of the DS4100 storage server, refer to the IBM TotalStorage DS4000 Hard Drive and Storage Expansion Enclosure Installation and Migration Guide. Improper drive migration might cause loss of configuration and other storage server problems. Contact your IBM support representative for additional information.

To connect a single additional expansion unit to the storage server, perform the following steps:

Note: The following procedures are for cold-caseprocedures (the DS4100 is powered down when expansion units are connected, as in the case of a new installation). For hot-caseprocedures (the DS4100 is powered on when expansion units are connected), see “Adding a DS4000 EXP100 to an existing DS4100 configuration (base storage server only)” on page 109. You can also refer to the IBM TotalStorage DS4000 Hard Drive and Storage Expansion Enclosure Installation and Migration Guide.

1.Follow the instructions in your expansion unit installation manual to set up and mount the new expansion unit.

2.Use the following procedure and Figure 53 on page 59 to connect a single expansion unit to the storage server:

a.Ensure that the enclosure ID switch on the new expansion unit is set to a value different than the value set for the DS4100 and any other expansion units in the loop. Also ensure that the link speeds of the expansion units are set to 2 Gbps. See “Setting the interface options” on page 32.

Note: When connecting the DS4100 to DS4000 EXP100 storage expansion units, do not use the tens digit (x10) setting. Use only the ones digit (x1) setting to set unique server IDs or enclosure IDs. For more information, see “Server ID (enclosure ID) settings” on page 33.

b.Use a fiber-optic cable to connect to the FC-Expansion Units port on the left RAID controller in the storage server to the In port on the left ESM board of the expansion unit.

c.Use a second fiber-optic cable to connect the FC-Expansion Units port on the right RAID controller in the storage server to the Out port on the right ESM board of the expansion unit.
