system documentation to make the new logical drives accessible to the operating system. Do not proceed with the configuration set-up you have completed the DS4000 Storage Manager installation.

Assemble any additional items in preparation for software installation. These items might include:

vHBA drivers

vController firmware version 05.42.xx.xx

vIP addresses for RAID controllers (for in-band management only)

vAdditional documentation for switches and HBAs, if needed

vDS4000 Storage Manager Version 9.10 Support CD, which includes the IBM DS4000 Storage Manager 9.1 software and DS4000 storage server controller firmware 05.42.xx.xx. You use this software to configure the storage subsystems. For the latest controller firmware, check the IBM support web site for DS4000 storage products.

Before any planned system shutdown or after any system additions, removals, or modifications (including logical drive creations, storage partitioning definitions, hardware changes, and so on), save the storage subsystem profile as explained in the DS4000 Storage Manager guide for your operating system. Save the profile in a location other than the logical drives created for the DS4100 storage server.

Important: Controller firmware version 05.42.xx.xx is required for the DS4100. However, this version of the controller firmware should be used only for the DS4100. Do not use controller firmware version 05.42.xx.xx for any DS4000 storage servers other than the DS4100. This version of the controller firmware does not support intermix of fibre-channel drive expansion enclosures. Please contact your IBM support representative for information about the availability of such support in the future.

Always refer to the readme that is included with the DS4100 storage server firmware package (whether the firmware is accessed by the Web or CD) for any special requirements or restrictions that apply to that particular firmware version.

Note: Make sure that you install the DS4000 Storage Manager event monitoring service to enable continuous monitoring of the status of the storage server. For more information about the importance of this information, see “Monitoring status through software” on page 70.
