Chapter 2. Installing the storage server
This chapter provides the information that you need to install the DS4100 into a
rack cabinet. This chapter also contains information about cabling, setting interface
options, and installing optional cables.
Installation overview
The following steps provide an overview of the installation process you will perform
in this chapter. Each step is detailed in the sections following the overview.

CAUTION:
Use safe practices when lifting.
Before you begin: The fully configured DS4100 weighs up to 40.8 kg (85.7 lbs). At
least three persons are required to safely lift the DS4100 from the shipping box and
to place it in the rack cabinet. If desired, you can open the sides of the shipping box
and remove the CRUs from the DS4100 before you lift it from the shipping box in
order to reduce the weight of the storage server. See “Removing the CRUs” on
page 25.
1. Review the preparation recommendations. See “Preparing for installation” on
page 18.
2. Prepare the installation site. See “Preparing the site” on page 19.
3. Prepare the rack cabinet. See “Preparing the rack cabinet” on page 19.
4. Unpack the DS4100 and other hardware from the shipping box.
5. Install the support rails in the rack cabinet. See “Installing the support rails” on
page 22.
6. If necessary, remove the CRUs from the DS4100 in order to lighten the
DS4100. See “Removing the CRUs” on page 25.
7. Install the DS4100. See “Installing the DS4100 into a rack cabinet” on page
28. If necessary, replace the CRUs in the DS4100. See “Replacing the
DS4100 CRUs” on page 29.
8. Set the DS4100 interface options. See “Setting the interface options” on page
32.
9. DS4100 base storage server only: If required, cable the DS4100 to other
DS4000 EXP100s. See Chapter 3, “Cabling the storage server,” on page 45.
