9-17 Enabling and Disabling ECM
ECM (Error Correction Mode) is a newly developed signaling system which greatly reduces the possibility of data being lost as a result of bad telephone lines. You should enable ECM if you frequently communicate over poor telephone lines. Using ECM, telephone charges are not affected, and may even be reduced, unless you encounter a bad line. In this case, the extra signaling involved will increase line charges but data will be transmitted much more reliably.
When transmitting from the memory, pages that are not sent correctly will be resent auto- matically, even if ECM is disabled. However, ECM is a more efficient way of resending dam- aged data, as only the damaged parts of the data will be resent. Also, the maximum possible number of retransmission attempts is much higher.
