Turning the computer off

You can turn your computer off using either the Power key or the Shut Down command. Detailed instructions follow.

Turning the computer off using the Power key

To turn the computer off with the Power key, follow these steps:

1If the computer is in sleep, press any key on the keyboard (except Caps Lock) to wake it.

For information on the sleep feature of your Macintosh PowerBook, see “Putting the Computer to Sleep,” the next major section in this chapter.

2Press and hold the Power key for about two seconds.

The following dialog box appears on the screen:

3 Press the Return key on the keyboard (or click the Shut Down button in the dialog box).

Turning the computer off using the Shut Down command

You can also turn your computer off by using the Shut Down command in the Special menu. Follow these steps:

1If the computer is in sleep, press any key on the keyboard (except Caps Lock) to wake it.

2Move the tip of the arrow to the word “Special” at the top center of the screen.

If the word “Special” does not appear at the top of the screen, you’re working in the wrong program. Choose Finder from the Application menu.

3 With the tip of the arrow on the word Special, press and hold down the trackpad button.
