Safety and Regulatory Compliance Information
packing material or if you movecomponents across plastic or carpets. Observe
the following guidelines to minimize the potentia l for electrostatic discharge (ESD)
damage, which cancause intermittent or complete component failures:
Always use an ESD wriststrap or ankle strap, and make sure that it is in
direct contact with your skin.
CAUTION: For safety, periodically check the resistance valueof the ESD strap. The
measurement should be in the range of 1 to10 Mohms.
When handling any component that is removed from the chassis, make sure
theequipmentendofyourESDstrapisattachedto oneoftheelectrostatic
discharge points on the chassis, which are shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2.
Avoid contactbetween the component and your clothing. ESD voltages
emitted from clothingcan still damage components.
When removing or installinga component, always place it component-side up
on an antistatic surface, in an antistatic card rack, or in an ele ctrostatic bag
(see Figure 108). If you are returninga component, place it in an electrostatic
bag before packing it.
