Maintaining the Air Filter
Check the air filter regularly for dust and debris. Clean or replace it as needed.
The air filter is hot-removableand hot-insertable, as described in Field-Replaceable
Units (FRUs) on page 4. Takenote of the following caution, however.
CAUTION: Do not operate the router for more than a few minutes when the air
filter has been removed. The fans and impellersare powerful enough to draw in
foreign material,such as bits of wire, through the unfiltered air intake,which could
damage router components.

Removing the Air Filter
The air filter is located at the frontof the chassis, below the FPC card cage
and cable management system (see Figure 61).
To remove the air filter, follow this procedure:
1. Attach an electrostatic discharge (ESD) grounding strap to your bare wris t and
connect the strap toone of the ESD points on the chassis. Make sure the router
is attached to a proper earth ground. For more information about ESD, see
“Preventing ElectrostaticDischarge Damage” on page 226.
2. Loosen the thumbscrewat each corner of the air filter cover.
3. Grasp the edges of the air filter and pull it away from the front of the chassis.
4. Inspect the filter for dust, dirt, and holes. If needed, clean it as described in
“Cleaning the Air Filter” on page 129 or replace it.
