3Com also uses the Internet defined protocol, ARP (Address Resolution Protocol). This protocol is used in a similar fashion to the tag resolution protocol, except that it is used to resolve an IP address to a network address.

RCP, or the 3Com remote character protocol is used to support the remote login session. The protocol defines a master/slaverelationship between the device initiating the login session and the device supporting the session. Terminal characters are separately sent between the master and slave.

Upon command completion, the slave sends the output of the executed command.

RCP also maintains an underlying protocol to determine if the login session is still active. Basically, the master pings the slave once a minute. After the timeout period passes without a successful ping, the remote session is aborted.
