Symptom

Possible Cause

Solution

Incompatible IP address on your computer

Your Web browser may be configured to use a proxy server.

Reset the IP address on your computer, as follows:

Windows 95 and 98:

1Run winipcfg.exe.

2Select the Ethernet adapter connected to the Dual 56K LAN Modem.

3Click Release All and then Renew All.

Windows 2000 and NT 4.0:

1Run ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew.

Macintosh:

1From the Apple menu, select Control Panels, and then TCP/IP.

2In the Connect via field, make sure Ethernet is selected.

3In the Configure field, select Using BootP Server to clear the fields.

4Close and save your changes.

5Re-open the TCP/IP control panel, and select Using DHCP Server. The fields should now read <will be supplied by server>.

6Select File, then Close, saving your changes.

Launch your Web browser, and set it to use the LAN Modem, as follows:

There is a configuration problem.

The wrong cable may be connected to the LAN port on the Dual 56K LAN Modem and your computer.

Workstation is set to use a Static IP address

Internet Explorer:

1From the View menu, choose Internet Options.

2Click the Connection tab.

3Uncheck the box labeled Connect using proxy server.

Netscape Navigator:

1From the Edit menu, choose Preferences.

2Under Advanced, choose Proxies.

3Check the box labeled Direct Connection to the Internet.

Reset the Dual 56K LAN Modem to the factory default setting. Refer to “Resetting the Dual 56K LAN Modem” in this chapter for assistance.

Make sure you are using the 8-pin to 8-pin cable labeled Ethernet that was provided with your Dual 56K LAN Modem. If you are using another 10BASE-T Ethernet cable, it must be a straight-through cable.

Configure the workstation to use dynamic IP addressing; refer to “Checking TCP/IP and IP Address Settings”in Chapter 3.

Follow the setup procedure for a Statically-configured workstation; refer to “Setting Up Your Computer If You Have a Static IP Address” in Chapter 3.
