Accessing the MGX 8850 and 8220

The MGX 8850 has a control port, maintenance port, and LAN port. The control port is an EIA/TIA−232 Data Communications Equipment (DCE) interface. To access the control, you must use a terminal or a PC with a terminal emulation program. The maintenance port is an EIA/TIA−232 DCE interface that utilizes Serial Line Internet Protocol (SLIP). You must configure an IP address to the interface before it can be used. The LAN port is a DB15 attachment unit interface (AUI). You must have the appropriate media converter.

The MGX 8220 also has the control port and maintenance port. The ports are the reverse of those on the MGX 8850—you use SLIP to connect to the control port and you use a terminal to connect to the maintenance port.

The MGX series’ CLI is different from that on the IGX and BPX. The inputs are entered one line at a time, and the results scroll up the screen. MGX commands are case sensitive; most of the commands are lowercase, except for Help.

Adding New Users

The adduser command will create a new user who can access the switch:

MGX.1.3.ASC.a > adduser user 2

MGX.1.3.ASC.a >

The user must have a lower privilege level than the user creating the account. The privilege level for this command is 6.

Changing Passwords

The MGX 8220 and MGX 8850 use different commands for changing user passwords. You can change the password of the user account you are logged in to. The password must be 6 to 15 characters. The privilege level for this command is 6.

To change the password on an MGX 8220, use cnfpwd followed by the old password and the new password twice:

MGX.1.3.ASC.a > cnfpwd oldpassword newpassword newpassword

The password for user is newpassword

This screen will self−destruct in ten seconds

To change the password on an MGX 8850, use the command passwd. The new password follows the command twice:

MGX.1.3.ASC.a > passwd newpassword newpassword

Assigning a Switch Hostname

Use the command cnfname to assign a hostname for the switch:

MGX.1.3.ASC.a > cnfname MGX2

MGX2.1.3.ASC.a >

The name is case sensitive and must be unique on the network. The command has a privilege level of 1.
