Caution
A heat sink must be installed on the processor. Installing a processor without a heat sink could damage the processor.
Thermal blanks must be present in all processor sockets where no processor is installed. If a processor is removed, a thermal blank must be installed in the empty socket.
When processors are installed in CPU sockets 3 and 4 (that is, more than two processors are installed in this server), you must install VRMs for the additional processors. For more information, see “Processor VRM requirements” on page 118.

If you are upgrading your server from one processor to two (or more), you may need to reconfigure your operating system so it can recognize the additional processor. For more information, see your operating system’s documentation.
To install a processor:
1 Install the most current BIOS version. For more information, see “Updating the BIOS” on page 155.
