This command initializes (formats) the entire area of the disk media that can be accessed from the INIT (User Space). At the same time, the HDD also implements defect management processing, allocating alternate blocks for defective portions of the disk media in accordance with the specifications in this command.

Furthermore, when the disk media is initialized with any of the following format attributes changed, the INIT must issue the MODE SELECT or MODE SELECT EXTENDED command before issuing this command and specify those format attributes in advance.
