4. Click Start on the ta skbar and click Shut Down. Select Shut do wn
the comput er , then click Yes or press Enter for shut down,
depending on your operatin g system.
If the system is configured with Windows 98 or Windows 2000,
the system shuts down aut omatically after a shor t interval.
If the system is configur ed with Windows NT, and after you
perform a Windows shut down, power off the system by pressing
and holding in the power button for four seconds or longer
before releasing.
Power-Saving Operation
If the system is running Windows 98 or Windows 2000, you can put it in
sleep mode (a power-saving state) by pressing and immediately releasing
the power button on the fr on t of th e system unit. The sleep mode i s a
convenient way of conser vi ng energy when you are goin g to be away
from your system for more than 15 minutes.
Take care to pr ess and immedi ately relea s e the
power butto n to enter the sl eep mode. Avoi d pressing an d h olding in th e
power button longer than three seconds or you may turn off power and
possibly lose data from any open applications.
The system also goes int o sl eep mode when it has been inact i ve, if the
power management has been enabled in BIOS, and an inactivity timeout
has been enabled. (See Ch a pter 3, Configurin g Your System , for
information on setting power management functions.)
When the system goes into sleep mode, it automatically saves data and
system status and th en sh u t s off power to all possible compon ents. Sleep
mode lets you sa ve power with out first savin g your work.
An amber sleep lamp indica tes that the system is in sleep m ode. Press a
key or move the mouse to resume system operation where you left off.
