It’sactuallypretty easy.Flippingthroughand settingparametersfromthe
panelis describedin detailin theStar L.userPrinter4OperationsManual.
Basically,allyoudo is press the [<]or [>]buttonsto scrollthroughthe
sequenceofpossibleparametersandvalues,whichis clearlyshownon the
paneldisplay.Youpress[v]whenyou wanttogo downand scrollthrough
alowermenu level. And you also press [v]when you want to save a
particularmenuitemas the valuefor acurrentparametersetting.
SETPOWER-UPenablesyoutosavenew settingsinapermanentmemory
calledEEPROM.The newsettings canbe stored evenwhen the poweris
turnedoff.Thefinalmenu(LOADFACTORYSET)isusedwhen youwant
to startfrom thebeginning,withthe originalfactorysettings.
2.2 CONTROLLINGTHE PRINTER
Inthis sectionyou’llmeet two separatecontrolsoverhow the Star Laser-
Printer4itself works.The INTERFACEparametercontrolscommunica-
tions between the printer and your computer.And the EMULATION
parameterdetermines,among other things, which set of commandsthe
printerwilluse. You canset theseINTERFACEandEMULATIONpara-
meterson the controlpanel.
2.2.1 TheINTERFACEparameter
TheINTERFACEparameter,the most basic of the Star LaserPrinter4’s
configurationsettings,defineshow yourcomputerconnectstothe printer.
Youcan set the INTERFACEto either Serialor Parallel.In most single-
computetenvironrnentsyou’lloptforthefasterParallelinterface;in amulti-
usernetworkyou maybe better off withSerial.
Theparticularprinterinterfacesettingsdon’tmatterasmuchasmakingsure
theymatchthoseon yourcomputer.If youuse an MS-DOScomputer,you
canset your computer’sparameterswiththe MODE command.See your
MS-DOSmanual.
MostMS-DOSand AT-compatiblecompute~supportupto threeparallel
andtwo serialports, whichcome onexpansionboardsyou plug intoyour
computer.Whenyouinstallsuch boardsyou mustset switchesto indicate
thenumberandaddressesoftheseports.Ifyou specifythewrongaddresses,
youwon’tbe able to print.
