referringtothenumberofcharactemprintedineachhorizontalinch,derives
fromhow typewritersspacetheircharactem.Linesand columnswerefirst
usedby earliercomputerprintem(onwhichthey arecalled horizontaland
verticalmotionindexes).You alreadyknowaboutthe Star LaserPrinter4
beingable toprint 300dotsto the inch.And theunit bywhichtypesetters
havemeasuredtext forcenturiesis thepoint, about l/72ndof an inch.
Onehint aboutmovingtheprint position:youcan confuseyourselfifyou
usemomthan oneortwo differentunitsduringthesamesession.So decide
beforehandhow accurately you need to move the print position (not
forgettinganygraphicsyou wanttoinclude).Then stickto the unit(s)you
choose.
