Technically,youcanuseanyoftheStarLaserPrinter4’sresidentfontswhen
yousendcommandsemulatingaparticularprinter.Buteachemulationonly
printsproperlywiththefontsdesignedforit.Furthermore,youcanonly use
symbolsets, or arrangementsof those fonts, which that emulation can
handle.So be aware that,if you try using fonts otherthan those recom-
mendedfor aparticular emulation,you will usuallyget printing in the
emulation’sdefaultfont.
Ifyou wantacharacterthat’snotin the fontyou’reusing,don’thesitateto
grabit. JustsendtheEscape sequencesthatselectyourdesired symbolset,
printwith it,thengo backto youroriginalfont.
3.4 MANAGINGFONTS
Youcan seewhichfontsare currentlyselectedonyourStar LaserPrinter4
byprintingastatussheet inofflinemode,asmentionedat thebeginningof
thischapter.AnotherTESTmode menuitem,describedin the StarLuser-
Printer4OperationsManual,alsolets youprintout alist of all thefonts
availableonthe printeratany givenmoment.
3.4.1Fonts
Most popularsoftware packages,particularlyword processors, let you
choosefontsfromwithintheprogram.Theysendtheappropriatecommands
tothe printerandyou don’tneedto understandhowtheydo it. MultiMate
usespitchto identifydifferent fonts,forexample,whileWordPe&ectuses
printformats.Thepointis, youmaynotevenhave toworryaboutselecting
whichfontto use.
Butnot allpackagesdothejob for you.Ifyou areinthis situation,youcan
selectanyfont attributementionedabove,eitherfromthe controlpanelor
bysending anEscapesequencecommandinone ofthe emulationmodes.
