2.2.6 Hints:The hex dump

To makeyour StarLaserPrinter4‘printin hexadecimalratherthanthe

usualASCIIsymbols,pressthecontrolpanelbuttonsthat puttheprinter

offlineand inPROGRAMmode. Moveto theEMULATIONparame-

ter’sHEX DUMPsettingand selectON.

SomecontrolorEscapecodescanbeproblemsonafewcomputers;those

computemchangecertaincodeswhensendingthemtotheprinter.If you

thinkyouhave thisproblemyouneedto see exactlywhatyourprinteris

receiving.Werecommendyourunashortprogramthatloopsthroughand

printstheASCIItable. Printinhexadecimalratherthantheusual ASCII

symbols.

Ifyou spotaproblemcodeyou cantry tobypassthe problem,eitherby

sendingeachcode directlytothe printer,orby changingyour system’s

printerdriver.Suchcomputer-specificsolutions,though,arebeyondthe

scopeof thismanual. Wesuggestthat ifnecessaryyou consultanother

progranimermorefamiliarwithyour computer.

Actually,ifyouaredebugginganyprogramyou mayfindthis hex-dump

modehelpfid.It can beagreat trouble-shooter.

2.3 CONTROLLINGTHE PAGE

Inthis section we look at two controls you have over how the Star

LaserPrinter4handlesand formats itspages: Youcan set values forthe

PAPERFEEDandLAYOUTparametersonthecontrolpanel.Attheendof

thissectionwe’ll alsopreviewdifferentwaysto move theprintposition.

2.3.1 ThePAPERFEED parameter

ThePAPERFEEDparameterlets youspecifybothwhatkindof paperyou

wantand howthepaper isfed.

Oneconvenientthingaboutalaserprinteristhatit doesn’tneedcontinuous

forms, sometimescalledfanfohipaper. Other printersfeed in astackof

forms—withpagesalljoinedbyperforations-by havingsprocketsengage

andpullalongpinfeedholespunchedalongeachsideofthepaper.After it’s

printedyou haveto tear off the pinfeed-holestripsand then separate the

pages.

WiththeStar LaserPrinter4youcanprint onavarietyofordinarycut sheet

pages.
