YourStar LaserPrinter4 can use two otherkindsof fonts,alongwiththose built into the printer.

Curtridgefonts,like the internalones, are permanentlystored on ROM chips.The differenceis thatthoseROMsarein removablecartridges.Your Star LaserPrinter4 has a slot for one font cartridge.

A cartridgemay hold anywherefrom half a dozen to two dozen fonts, all differingfmm the internalfontsin size, style,strokeweightor symbolset. You’llfindthatcartridgefontsopenup a widerrangeof typefacestoo, such as TmsRomn,PrestigeElite,HelvetandLetterGothic.Generally,cartridge and internalfont typefacesm suitablefor both text and headlines.

The third kind of font is neither built into your Star LaserPrinter4 nor availablejust by slippingin a cartridge.You dowrdoudthis kind of font, which means you use a computer program to send charactem from a computerdiskto yourprinter’smemory.Anydownloadedfont(sometimes called a “soft” or “installed”font) that you put into the printer’s RAM disappearswhenyouturnoff theprinter,so youhaveto downloadthatfont againnext time you want it.

Downloadablefonts run the gamut from Egyptianhieroglyphicsto those eye-catchingdecorativefontsknownas dispkzyfonts.Theyalsoincludethe more exotic foreign-languagecharacters,such as Arabic or Cynllic, and symboland mathematicalfonts (sometimeswith fractions).

How can you comparecartridgeand downloadablefonts? When you use cartridgefonts you don’thave to take time to downloadthem. They don’t take anyof yourStarLaserPrinter4’sRAMmemoryeither.Butdownload- able fonts offer many more choices.Downloadablefontsusuallycostless too.

The printer alwaysknowswhereits internalfonts are. For each emulation program,it also keepstrackof cartridgeand downloadedfonts in a part of its memorycalled thefont tuble.

Sowiththe StarLaserPrinter4youcanhavemanyfontsavailableat anyone time—the internalfonts,the fontson any cassettesyou’vepluggedin, and any fonts you have downloaded.You can change fonts in mid-line to emphasize a word or two whenever you want. You can mix internal, cartridgeand downloadedfonts in the same document.
