Theseare inpriorityorder. Thecurrentsettingsalways overridetheinitial
sessionsettings,whichinturnoverridethepower-onsettings,whichinturn
overridethefactory settings.
FactorysettingsareprogrammedintotheStarLaserPrinter4whenit isbuilt
atthe factory.Your printerkeepsthe factory settingsforits parametersin
ROM;theyneverchange.Youcancopythemintothecurrentsettingsorany
othersettings as needed.But the onlyway you can return to the factory
defaultsis fromthe controlpanel;no commandsdothis.

Thepower-on settingsare the normal defaultsettings.The printer keeps
themevenwhenyou turnoffthepower. Whenyouturnon theprinter,these
power-onsettingsgetcopiedintothe initialandcurrentparametersettings.
Youprobablywillnotoftenchangethe StarLaserPrinter4’sinitialsettings
(sometimescalled“sessionsettings”).You’lllikelyonlychangethemwhen
you wantto use adifferent printeremulation thannormal. These initial
settingsstaythe same asthe power-onsettingsuntilyou changethem.
Onthe otherhand,yoursoftwarewill probablychangethecurrentsettings
manytimes withinthesame document,witheverychange offont or print
style.
2.1.4 How to changeparameters
Withthe printeroffline,if you pressthe [PROGRAM]buttonthe printer
goesinto“program’’mode.Youcanthenstepthroughthelaserprinter’sfour
levelsof programmenuto configureyour printer(seepage 46-48,opera-
tionsManual).That’stheprocessofchangingcertainprintersettingssoyour
computerandprintercan communicateproperly.
