programmenuonthe StarLaserPrinter4’scontrolpanel,or bysendingthe
printeroneof the supersetcommandsatthe endof this chapter.
2.2.4 Whatare theemulatedprinters like?
MostofthetimeyouwillprobablychooseHPLaserJet11Pemulation,which
isthe defaultwhenyou turnon the StarLaserPrinter4.That’s becausethe
LaserJetIIP,like theStar LaserPrinter4,is alaserprinter. Thisemulation
modegivesyouthebestcontroloveryourprinter’sfeatures,andworkswith
mostpopularapplicationsprograms.
TheFX-850emulationis quitepowerfultoo.It includesall thedot-matrix
printer commands(includinggraphics) used by hundredsof programs.
Mostly,you’llchoosethisoptionwhenyourun aprogramthatcannotsend
laserprintercommands.
2,2.5 TheEmulationparameter
The Star LaserPrinter4’s Emulationsetting defines which printer it is
imitating:Hewlett-PackardLaserJet11PorEpsonFX–850.
Mostofthe otherEMULATIONvaluesbelowcanbechangedwithEscape
codesas wellas from thepanel.
AfewcomputerschangecertaincontrolorEscapecodeswhensendingthem
tothe printer,whichnaturallycausesconfision.Moreover,manyprogram-
mersprefertosee hexadecimalprintoutwhentheyaredebuggingprograms.
Tohelp withthese situations,youcanmake yourStarLaserPrinter4print
inhexadecimalratherthantheusualASCIImodebyswitchingONtheHEX
DUMPparametersetting.
