trace

The trace command allows the administrator to determine the route that packets use when traveling to their destination. It is commonly used as a diagnostic command (traceroute on most systems).

The trace command does not recognize DNS names with hyphens.

Syntax

trace ip {host address} [hops number] [wait timeout]

Parameters

host

The trace packets to the system identified by this host name.

address

The trace packets to the system identified by this dotted IP

 

address.

hops number

Specify the maximum hops.

wait timeout

Specify the wait timeout in seconds.

Default

 

The wait timeout defaults to 5 seconds.

The maximum hops defaults to 30.
