Horizontal Sync Horizontal sync is the --40IRE pulse in
NTSC systems (--300 mV pulse for PAL systems) occurri ng
at the beginningof each line. This pulse signals thepicture
monitor to go backto the left side of the screen and trace
another horizontal line of picture i nformation.
Hue Hue is the property of color which all owsus t o distin-
guish between colors such as red, yellow, purple, etc.
Hum Hum refers to the undesirable coupling of the 60 Hz
power sine wave for NTSC systems (50 Hzpower sine wave
in PALsystems) into other electrical signals.
ITS (PAL) Insertion Test Signal. A test signal which is
inserted inone line of the vertical interval to facilitate in-ser-
vice testing.
IRE (NTSC) A unit equal to 1/140 of the peak-to-peak
amplitude of the videosignal, which is typically 1 volt. The
0 IRE point is at blanking level, with sync tip a t --40 IRE and
white extendingto +100 IRE. IRE stands for Institute of
Radio Engineers, the organization which defined t he unit.
Linear Distortion Refers to distortions which are inde-
pendent of signal amplitude.
Luminance (Y) The signal which re presents brightness,
or the amount of light in the picture. This is the only signal
required for black and white pictures, and for color system si t
is obtained as a weighted sum (Y = 0.3R + 0.59G + 0.11B) of
the R, G, and B signals.
MII (M2) Format Second generation camera/recorder
system developed by Panasonic; also used for just the record-
er or the interconnect format. MII uses a version of the (Y,
R--Y,B --Y) component set.
Modulated (NTSC) Whenreferring to television test
signals, this term implies that chrominance information is
present. (For example, a modulated staircase has subcarrier
on each step.)
