Flexibility—full Cisco IOS support, multiprotocol routing (IP, Internetwork Packet Exchange [IPX], AppleTalk, IBM/SNA) and bridging

Modular architecture—accepts WAN and voice interface cards, autosensing 10/100 Fast Ethernet, expansion slot for adding a VPN module

Security—Firewall feature set; IPSec Data Encryption Standard (DES) and Triple DES (3DES) support; RISC processor enables software-based encryption performance at 512 kbps for VPNs; device authentication and key management such as IKE, X.509v3 digital certification, support for Certificate Enrollment Protocol (CEP) with certification authorities (CAs), such as Verisign and Entrust

User authentication—supports Password Authentication Protocol/Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol (PAP/CHAP), RADIUS, TACACS+

VPN tunneling—supports IPSec, generic routing encapsulation (GRE), Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP), Layer 2 Forwarding (L2F)

Management—manageable through Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) (CiscoView and CiscoWorks2000), Telnet, and the console port

Quality of service (QoS)—supports committed access rate (CAR), policy routing, weighted fair queuing (WFQ), generic traffic shaping (GTS), Resource Reservation Protocol (RSVP)
